NATIONAL LEAGUE CENTRAL TEAM NAMES:

  >> Chicago Cubs

Cubs Team Name:  Originally called the White Stockings in 1876, the club went through various names, including the Colts, in honor of their manager Cap Anson’s appearance in the film The Runaway Colt.  In 1902, loaded with young players, sportswriters began calling them the Cubs.  The name stuck.  It was officially changed in 1907.

  >> Cincinnati Reds

Reds Team Name:  The Reds were named in honor of the Cincinnati Red Stockings, the very first professional team in 1869.  Though the team officially changed its name from the Reds to the Red Legs during the heightened anti-communist times of the mid 1950s, few ever paid attention and the name was changed back.

  >> Houston Astros

Astros Team Name:  Named the Colt 45s in 1962 after the popular Old West pistol, they were eventually forced to change the name when a trademark problem arose with the Colt Firearms Company.  In 1965 a contest was held, and Houston, home to NASA, chose the Astros.

  >> Milwaukee Brewers

Brewers Team Name:  Coming from Seattle in 1970, where they were the Pilots, the Brewers changed their name in order to reflect the city’s long history with the brewing industry, and to honor past Milwaukee teams who were also named the Brewers.

  >> Pittsburgh Pirates

Pirates Team Name:  Originally known as the Alleghenies in 1887, they were dubbed the Pirates in 1889 after “pirating” away second baseman Louis Bierbauer from the Philadelphia Athletics.

  >> St. Louis Cardinals

Cardinals Team Name:  Originally known as the St. Louis Brown Stockings in 1867, and then later as simply the Browns, the team eventually changed its name to the Perfectos, and changed the team color to red.  “What a lovely shade of cardinal,” a female fan commented upon seeing the new uniforms.  A sportswriter heard the comment and the name stuck, becoming official in 1900.
